Frequently Asked Questions

Check below for information about residential and commercial collection. Additional questions can be directed to info@southshorewaste.ca or (902) 543-2991.

Yes. Single family residences, multi-unit buildings and businesses must follow these guidelines.

Clear bags are preferred for all garbage.  One non-clear bag may be used for personal garbage items. One non-clear bag is permitted per household/ business, every garbage collection. If you use one non-clear garbage bag, the rest of your garbage must be loose and placed in clear bags. All waste in non-clear bags must be sorted properly.

Empty all non-clear bags into clear bags so garbage is loose. The empty kitchen-catcher bag then goes in the clear bag.

Items such as mattresses, box springs, couches, upholstered chairs, pillows, plastic furniture, rugs, carpet, toilets, sinks, acrylic bathtubs, doors with or without windows, vinyl siding, drywall, insulation, laundry baskets, plastic totes, kids swimming pools, artificial Christmas trees, dishwashers with plastic interiors, ceramic lamp frames and shades.

Check out our green cart brochure.

Clear garbage bags increase the amount of recyclables, paper and organics diverted from landfill. Clear bags make it easier to inspect bags for recyclables, food waste and hazardous waste items. Hazardous waste is dangerous to collect and can injure waste collectors.

Most local retailers sell clear bags. Larger retailers carry different sizes and thicknesses.

You’ll receive a friendly reminder about the clear garbage bag program. Continued use of more than one non-clear bag will result in a rejection. Rejected non-clear bags won’t be collected. This means you’ll have to put your garbage in clear bags before the next collection.

Cardboard must be flattened, bundled, tied and kept dry.

Leaf and yard waste can either be disposed of directly in your green cart, or in paper bags placed curbside on the same day as your organics and garbage collection. Plastic bags are not permitted for leaf and yard waste collection. Paper leaf and yard waste bags grind easily and break down quickly when they are processed. Plastic bags and plastic-type biodegradable bags get stuck in grinding equipment and cause contamination in the compost. Paper bags are available at most hardware, department and grocery stores.   You can also drop off leaf and yard waste at South Shore Waste Solutions at 908 Mullock Road.
