Bears & Waste Storage

Bears can smell food odours from green carts and garbage containers one kilometer away. They consider this a food source and will return again.

You can minimize waste odours that attract bears.

• Store green carts and bagged waste in a shed until pickup day.
• Put carts and bags out on the morning of pickup, by 7:00 am.
• Clean your green cart with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water after every pickup.
• Freeze food scraps and put them in your green cart the morning of pickup.
